Committees, 2000/2001

Academic and Governance Committee

  1. Recommend guidelines for a performance evaluation system that is based upon "an expanded view of scholarship, unit-level needs, and maximal engagement" (as described in USM’s Strategic Plan, "A National University for the Gulf South," Spring 1999).
  2. Study and report to the Senate on governance and decision making issues relative to the Gulf Coast/Hattiesburg campus relationship.

Administration and Faculty Evaluations

  1. Review the process for administrative evaluations and recommend effective measures to ensure that evaluations are done in a timely manner.
  2. Consider making the evaluations deadline part of the academic calendar.
  3. Administer evaluations of Chairs, Directors, and Deans.
  4. Review and recommend procedures to assure confidentiality of faculty evaluations.
  5. Seek the endorsement of the Provost and Deans for the administrative evaluations process.
  6. Recommend actions to encourage the use of evaluation results.
  7. Consider implementing annual faculty evaluations of the Vice Presidents, the Provost, and the President.

Archives

  1. Examine Senate records and forward appropriate documents to the USM Archives.

Athletic Liaison

  1. Represent the Faculty Senate at designated athletic functions.
  2. Work with the Staff Council and the Credit Union to coordinate efforts at the hospitality tent before home football games.
  3. Monitor actions taken to implement recommendations made in the Report of the Task Force for the enhancement of Athletics ("Building Community and Tradition Through Athletic Achievement," May 1999).
  4. Investigate the feasibility of providing discounted tickets to athletic events to Gulf Coast campus students.

Awards

  1. Select HEADWAE recipient
  2. Select Excellence in Teaching and Service recipients
  3. Select Excellence in Librarianship Award
  4. Select recipients for Faculty Memorial Fund Scholarship

Benefits and Work Environment

  1. Review health insurance benefits
  2. Make recommendations for additional benefits
  3. Study and make recommendations concerning faculty compensation and workload issues pertaining to distance education (Internet courses, interactive video and correspondence courses)
  4. Recommend and implement a method of gathering data from exiting faculty members to ascertain why they are leaving the University.
  5. Consider gathering information from faculty search committee chairs to document difficulties in recruitment of qualified faculty for USM positions.
  6. Continue to monitor issues surrounding faculty pay schedules.
  7. Continue to monitor trends in faculty salaries.

Constitution and Bylaws

  1. Review documents for consistency
  2. Recommend amendments if necessary
  3. Review and clarify procedures for voting in the June organizational meeting of the Senate.
  4. Review and clarify procedures for electing Faculty Senate officers.
  5. Consider a bylaws change requiring committee chairs to maintain records of committee activities.
  6. Consider a bylaws change requiring committees to present a summary annual report for the Senate archives.

Elections

  1. Reapportion Senate membership in the fall.
  2. Conduct Senate elections in the spring.
  3. Document procedures for conducting Senate elections.

Environment

  1. Monitor environmental resolution passed by the 1999/2000 Faculty Senate and report to the Senate on the progress of this resolution.
  2. Make recommendations that will preserve and enhance the University’s grounds and gardens.
  3. Confer with relevant administrators and managers to offer timely advice on environmental issues.
  4. Inform the campus community and University constituencies of issues related to prudent and informed environmental policies and actions.
  5. Respond to University actions and policies that affect the protection of the natural environment.
  6. Review and respond to the Campus Master Plan to be presented in the fall of 2000.

  1. Recommend faculty development opportunities.

Government Relations

  1. Keep informed about legislation pertinent to USM, the IHL system or to state employees, and report to the Senate.
  2. Recommend Senate action on political issues.

  4. Maintain contact with local state legislators.

  1. Work with the Office of Technology Resources and other entities to enhance faculty access to technology.

  4. Gather information on campus technology infrastructure enhancements and report to the Senate as needed.
