CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Beyond Colonial Studies—An Inter-American Encounter

( Providence , Rhode Island , November 4-6, 2004 )

Continuing the cross-disciplinary dialogue inaugurated at the First Early Ibero/Anglo Americanist Summit in

Tucson
,
AZ

, in 2002,
this conference is intended to explore how comparative approaches may take colonial American studies beyond the terms that generally
define the discourse in the various disciplines (English, Spanish, History, etc.). We are particularly interested in the consequence of the
particular events, actors and institutions that are the usual focus of colonial studies, and therefore will give preference to submissions that
address, in a comparative manner, the ways in which these are remembered, imagined and used by others who follow. The regular sessions
and workshops will take place at the Providence Biltmore Hotel. Keynote addresses will be delivered at the reading room of the John Carter
Brown Library by Rolena Adorno (Yale) and David Shields (U South Carolina). Besides the sessions and workshops, there will be lunches,
receptions, and plenty of other opportunities in various locations in order to foster informal conversation among scholars from different
fields with an interest in the early

Americas

. The DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS has been extended to
May 15, 2004
. Proposals for
papers to be given in the plenary sessions should be explicitly comparative and address one of the topics specified on the Program
