LONGFELLOW FRIENDS ARCHIVAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
FOR 2000
The Friends of the Longfellow House, the Cambridge,
Massachusetts,
home of the 19th-century poet, under National Park
Service management
since 1972, offers two fellowships annually, each for
$1,000. These
stipends have been established with the goal of bringing
greater interest
to the archival holdings of the site. They include
materials (letters,
manuscripts, books, photographs, material objects) from
the 17th to the
early 20th century with the heaviest concentration in
the mid to late 19th
century. A strong part of the collection
focuses on the taste
of Longfellow, his wife Frances Appleton, their
children, and relatives
such as the Dana family.
Recipients of the fellowships are requested to be in
residence in
the Cambridge/Boston area for a minimum of two weeks
between November and
September of the coming year. It is expected that a copy
of whatever
publication results from work at the Longfellow site
will be sent to the
House. Also, if research is far enough advanced,
recipients might be
encouraged to give a talk for the Friends of the
Longfellow House.
To be considered for a Fellowship, applicants should
submit an
application form, a brief (1-3 page) project
description, a curriculum
vitae and the name and telephone number of one
professional
reference. The project proposal should include an
account of how the
applicant intends to use archival materials in the
Cambridge/Boston area
Preference will be given to applicants whose research
plan makes maximum
use of the Longfellow Collections, although it is
understood that
researchers may also want to work at such places as the
Massachusetts
Historical Society and Houghton Library at Harvard.
Please note that the Longfellow House Archives are
temporarily
removed to another location in Boston while the
Longfellow National
Historic Site is closed for renovation through 2001. The
Longfellow
Archives are fully accessible in their temporary
location.
Requests for application forms and initial information
about the
archives should be sent by E-mail to: Robert Mitchell at
<Rmitchell@clarku.edu> Mail requests and completed
application to the
Fellowships Committee, Longfellow House, 105 Brattle
Street, Cambridge, MA
02138.
Deadline: October 1, 2000
