Center for Advanced Studies in Race, Ethnicity, and Society in Africa
and the Atlantic World
Fellowship Deadline: 1999-12-31
"African Cross-Currents in Atlantic Cultures"
Scholars of African ethnicities and cultures in the Diaspora are invited
to apply for a one-year, postdoctoral fellowship at the Carter G. Woodson Institute's Center for Advanced Studies of Race, Ethnicity, and Society
in Africa and the Atlantic World at the University of Virginia, to begin August 1, 2000. We are particularly interested in projects related to
West and Central African ethnicities and cultures.
Funded by the Ford Foundation, this teaching and research fellowship
is designed to advance individual scholarship while facilitating the reconceptualization of African and African-American Studies through
interdisciplinary collaboration. During their residency, fellows will
be expected to participate in the Woodson Institute's workshops and conferences; deliver up to four guest lectures in introductory African
and African-American Studies classes; and teach one undergraduate or
graduate seminar.
Fellows will receive a $30,000 salary, plus up to $10,000 in benefits
and research support. The deadline for the 2000-2001 fellowship competition
is Dec. 31, 1999; all applications must be postmarked by that date.
Application guidelines and forms are available on the Woodson
Institute's website at the address listed below. Applicants will be notified of
the decision on their applications by early March 2000.
